Excerpt from biographical collector card: "Her work with Native Americans began following her meeting with the Sioux chief Red Cloud in 1887 in the Dakotas. Red Cloud was a great leader and an unwavering Catholic. She began her aid to the Indian missions providing food and clothing, building schools, paying teachers’ salaries and addressing the spiritual needs of the people by locating priests willing to serve this special ministry. The first mission school opened in Santa Fe, New Mexico with many additional schools west of the Mississippi River rapidly developing. Katharine spent millions of her own money in this endeavor."
